Been out, but am back now! Thu, 11 Sep 2008 15:38:49 +0000 Mat Houchens Sorry on the lack of updates lately guys.  I’ve been nailed to a bed for the past 4 days with a throat infection.  We’ve missed a lot of breaking stories that we’ll post in one post just to catch up with the news.

For some reason the few other writers we have on here weren’t able to get on and do any writing either.  In fact a text message from InfiniteX said this:

Get your sick ass up and work

Well I was bedridden the past 4 days what’s your excuse?

UFC 88 Post Fight Interviews Sun, 07 Sep 2008 18:16:54 +0000 Mat Houchens Enjoy the UFC 88 Post Fight Interviews:

Rashad Evans and Chuck Liddell

Rich Franklin and Matt Hamill

Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt

Caught with his hand in the “Sugar” bowl Sun, 07 Sep 2008 05:37:15 +0000 Mat Houchens UFC 88 main event Chuck Liddell was a matchup that was sure to not disappoint fans with the explosiveness capabilities of both fighters.  Rashad’s pre fight interviews were tauntalizing as he called Chuck “old”.  His taunts didn’t end there.  Rashad Evans continued to show off and taunt Chuck Liddell in the octagon in the first round.

While Round 1 seemed to be setting up the infamous style of Rashad Evans’ recent fights with his “hit and run” tactics that seemed to be putting the fight into an eminent decision status.  InfiniteX here at MMA Chump’s terms were “chicken sh*t”.  I disagree.  I think Rashad was gaining confidence as stated by Rogan throughout round 1.  Every time Liddell missed and Rashad moved, it gave Rashad the confidence needed to throw punches.  Round 1 ended with a toss up on who you would give it to, setting me up perfectly for my split decision prediction.

In Round 2, Liddell started with a slight cut on his right eye and it was clear that Rashad felt more comfortable in this round.  Exchanges were more frequent and looked as though the action we were waiting for was soon to come.  It was soon to come but probably from the opposite side than most of us thought.  Chuck leaned in for a left hand uppercut while Rashad came with an overhand right.  Chuck’s uppercut missed while Rashad Evans landed his haymaker clean on the Iceman laying Chuck Liddell out for the count.  Liddell fell motionless on the mat without an ounce of movement.  Herb Dean quickly called the fight after Liddell hit the mat.

Where does this leave Rashad Evans?  Well it clearly puts him at the top of the list to fight Forrest Griffin.  Dana White had been quoted saying a win from Liddell would get him a title match against Forrest but will the same be true for Rashad?  With his undefeated record it’s hard to deny him a shot.

Where does this leave Chuck Liddell?  This is a question that will remain up in the air.  Many are already saying that it’s the end of Liddell’s fighting career.  While retirement might be the way he should go, Liddell is a fighter and I think we’ll see him in the ring again.  Against who is still up in the air.  Losing his last 3 of 4 fights, it does put him in a situation for a “must win” against whoever he fights next.  Personally, I would love to see Liddell vs Rampage again but that could be setting up the Iceman for 2 straight losses.

UFC 88 Results & Recap Sun, 07 Sep 2008 04:46:05 +0000 Mat Houchens I want to start by saying I went 100% on my predictions for UFC 88.  I got crap from InfiniteX all week about my pick of Rashad beating Liddell.  I’ll give him the fact that I definitely didn’t think Rashad would knock out Liddell but either way, it was a good pay day for bets placed with Rashad winning as the underdog.  I didn’t get the way of win right in the main event but in the other 2 big fights, I had it right.

Bounced Cheick Thu, 04 Sep 2008 15:35:33 +0000 Mat Houchens Cheick Kongo

There was a lot of hype about who Brock Lesnar will fight next.  For a while, MMA Chump as well as others, reported that we would see Brock Lesnar vs Cheick Kongo.  Well, we all know that Brock Lesnar will be fighting Randy Couture in UFC 91, so what about Cheick?

There’s plenty of matchups that would be interesting to watch with Cheick.  One that intrigues me would be a rematch of Cheick Kongo vs Heath Herring.  In their last fight (UFC 82) Heath Herring barely got away with a win with a split decision.  In a rematch, I thinK Cheick has come a long way and could beat Heath Herring now in this stage.

Cheick has been training with Rampage Jackson and has the raw power to knock anyone out.  Who do you want to see put up against Cheick?

Google Chrome Wed, 03 Sep 2008 22:33:01 +0000 Mat Houchens Google has released it’s own web browser: Google Chrome.  Before Google Chrome, I was a huge fan of FireFox.  The new release of FireFox was great but took way too much memory.  Google Chrome comes with the functionality of FireFox but at a much lesser stress level for your PC.  We at MMA Chump highly urge users to download google Chrome to view this site and all others.

Why should I use Google Chrome?

  • Crash Control - Every tab you’re using is run independently in the browser, so if one app crashes it won’t take anything else down.
  • Incognito Mode - Don’t want pages you visit to show up in your web history? Choose incognito mode for private browsing.
  • Safe Browsing - Google Chrome warns you if you’re about to visit a suspected phishing, malware or otherwise unsafe website.
  • Simpler Downloading - No intrusive download manager; you see your download’s status at the bottom of your current window.
  • New Tab Page - Every time you open a new tab, you’ll see a visual sampling of your most visited sites, most used search engines, and recently bookmarked pages and closed tabs.
So check out Google Chrome.

Randy Couture: Never Say Never Wed, 03 Sep 2008 12:42:35 +0000 Mat Houchens In an exclusive statement to Sherdog, Randy Couture talks about his return and what the future holds for him.

“I said all along, ‘Never say never,’” Couture told “When I sat down, looked at the legal situation and how long it was going to take for me to fight this battle [in court] and to be in position to fight Fedor, that was kind of a turning point.”

Fedor remains in the mindset of Randy Couture but Randy made it clear that he won’t be overlooking Brock Lesnar in yesterdays press conference.  Randy’s age definitely played a factor in his return to UFC.  His want to fight mentaility also probably sped up the process in returning to the UFC as it was the easiest resolution for him to get back fighting due to the legal battles.

“Obviously, the only fight I’ve been pining for is the Fedor fight, but that’s not going to happen right away,” Couture said. “In the interest of resolving our differences, I agreed to fight Brock. He’s a huge man and a formidable opponent. I’m not overlooking him by any means.”

So Randy cleared it up for us right here.  Fedor fight is not going to happen right away.  It won’t happen before the end of 2008 and quite possibly not at all.  Dana is firm on the UFC rules and won’t bend them to get Fedor to fight.  I think Randy feels that he can use his relationship with Fedor to get him to fight in the UFC.

Fedor vs Couture On Hold Wed, 03 Sep 2008 00:47:54 +0000 Mat Houchens Well we were lucky enough to be included in Dana White’s Media Conference Call earlier this afternoon.  Dana let some big news go during this announcement, including the upcoming fight on November 15th with Randy Couture vs Brock Lesnar.  Dana White had this to say to open the call (sorry we didn’t get the first 10 minutes):

I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will be returning to action in the Octagon.  He’s a legend in the UFC, and one of the fighters that helped build this sport.  I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath Herring.  His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating. It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is one that will go down in the history books.

This fight will be one that will definitely boost MMA to the next level.  While Elite XC has Kimbo, they don’t put him up against the fighters people want to see.  Dana  White says he will!  Dana is expecting this to be the biggest UFC fight ever bringing in over 1 million PPV buys.  I have to admit the fight will be interesting.

Dana has plans on consolidating the belts to one true champion.  After TUF 8, Nogueira and Mir will face off for the interim belt.  This is to be set towards the December time frame.  Bringing us a big match in early ‘09 for the consolidation of the belts.  The winner of Lesnar/Couture will face the winner of Nogueira/Mir.

Many people are asking “Why Lesnar?”.  The answer is simple: MONEY.  UFC asked us what fight we wanted to see, and the majority of us said Lesnar vs Couture.  I’m sure all of us could agree that other fighters should have a shot before Lesnar but when it comes down to business, it just makes sense.  This fight will break records with two high profile fighters going at it.

What about Fedor?  Dana specifically stated in the call today that Fedor is under contract and will wait until the contract is up before contacting Fedor.  Brock began getting very upset over the constant mentioning of Fedor, which I can see his point.  But Brock, you have to understand, people are under the assumption that Couture came back because Dana said he would get the fight that Randy wants.  Dana also made it clear that he will not bend the UFC rules and contract to get Fedor.  Fedor will have to be willing to sign a multi fight deal with UFC to fight Couture in the UFC.  So at this point, it is very slim that the Fedor/Couture fight will happen any time soon.

Either way, UFC 91 fight card is already off to an incredible start with the matchup between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar.  This event on November 15th will be huge and I personally can’t wait for it.

Press Release: UFC 91 - Couture vs Lesnar Tue, 02 Sep 2008 21:00:41 +0000 Mat Houchens Official Press Release from UFC regarding the media conference call today (You can listen to the call here):

SATURDAY, NOV. 15, 2008

Las Vegas, NV (USA) - On November 15th, the champ is back.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White today announced that
after a year away from the game, UFC(r) heavyweight champion Randy “The
Natural” Couture will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon to
defend his title against rising star Brock Lesnar in a clash of titans
destined to shake the foundations of the sport. This championship bout,
the biggest heavyweight title fight in years, will headline UFC 91:
COUTURE vs. LESNAR, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on
Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008.

“I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will
be returning to action in the Octagon,” said Dana White, UFC President.
“He’s a legend in the UFC, and one of the fighters that helped build
this sport.  I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases
you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his
opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for
real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath
Herring.  His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating.
It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight
champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is
one that will go down in the history books.”

Ticket information for UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be announced

UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be available live on pay-per-view at 10
p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell
ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a
suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or
high-definition broadcasts (where available).

A UFC Hall of Famer whose name is synonymous with mixed martial arts,
Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture (16-8) is the only fighter in history to win
the UFC world heavyweight title three times, and that’s not even
mentioning his two UFC light heavyweight titles. Owner of heavyweight
wins over the likes of Maurice Smith, Vitor Belfort, Kevin Randleman,
and Pedro Rizzo (twice), the 45-year old Las Vegas resident turned back
the clock in 2007 with a stirring win over Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 that
netted him his third heavyweight crown.  Couture defended his title for
the first time at UFC 74 with a third round TKO of number one contender
Gabriel Gonzaga, and now the man often referred to as “Captain America”
will look to prove once again that he should never be counted out in a
fight when he takes on Brock Lesnar.

“I have a lot of respect for Brock as an athlete and a collegiate
wrestler, but I know exactly where he’s at, he’s trying to make the
transition from a wrestler to mixed martials arts. I’ve been there, done
that, and I know where the pitfalls are. This will be an interesting
matchup, and it will be very nice to be home in the Octagon for this

A physically gifted athlete with the size, speed, and power to impose
his will on any opponent, Brock Lesnar (2-1) made an immediate impact in
the UFC when he debuted here in February of 2008, and he has his sights
set on shocking the world on November 15th. A four-time All-American,
two-time Big Ten Champion, and 2000 NCAA Division I National Champion in
wrestling, Lesnar made a name for himself internationally after college
as a professional wrestler, but he soon found his true love in mixed
martial arts in 2006.  After a 69 second win in his pro debut a year
later, Lesnar entered the UFC and made a positive impression in a loss
to former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 81, but at UFC 87 in
August, the Minneapolis-St. Paul resident showed why he is rapidly
becoming one of the most feared fighters in the sport today and an
immediate threat to the heavyweight throne.

“It’s an honor to fight Randy Couture, he’s a legend in this sport, and
to get the chance to test myself against him is a gift,” said Lesnar.
“A lot guys would love to have this opportunity, Randy is the UFC
heavyweight champion.  There is one goal that I’ve had since I started
training in MMA and that is to capture the title.  Now that I’m getting
the chance, nothing is going to stop me.  I’m walking out of the Octagon
with the belt around my waist.”
