By cutting the flow of oxygen to his lungs, his lungs or forced to grow more capillaries, thus make more use of his availible oxygen. It's kind of like a batter on deck with a weighted bat. When the batter finally gets at bat, the bat feels real light and manuverable in his arms. When Wanderlei takes off the snorkel after his routine, he can breath so much deeper and better than when he did before training with it:There for his stamina is increaed ten fold.
As for the sitting in the bucket of ice and then in the sauna, this is to condition his body for the exterme body temperature changes that take place in a fight.Think about how many degrees a fighter's body temp increases just when the fight starts. It then drops in between rounds and increases as the next round begins.Being able to with stand these temperature changes is the key to not getting exausted during the fight.
Personally, I think Wanderleigh is awesome and his conditioning proves to work as he is explosive as hell with his striking. As a cell and moleculer biology/pre-med student, I think Wanderleigh is a GENIUS.

I understand the concept, my concern is that it is not the most safe way to do it. But the idea and the drive to succeed is admirable.

If his heart is fine and can handle the shock, his training should only make him stronger.

I can't imagine he would have many brain cells left but I think to get the name the axe murderer you would have to be missing a few anyway.

I would also hope that he got dr. permission. I love the trainings that they show leading up to the fights. I have learned alot about the fighters.
