I started training for MMA recently and found out my neck is weak as hell.  I know it will eventually adapt but in the meantime what can I do to strengthen it up?  Do you think shrugs help the neck any or just the traps?

shrugs won't do very much if anything to your neck because hopefully you're maintaining good posture, proper form and using your shoulders, what i use to build up my neck is either the neck machine if you're workin out in a fairly well equipped gym, other options would be the resistance bands (leave your ego at the door if/when you use these), you can also try to use one of the bands to attach weights on commonly used for adding weight to your dips and pull-ups, just strap it around the head and go to town in whatever manner set-wise that you work out

You could wear 10lb chains like pitbulls do. Rampage does it :) (InfiniteX, that was a joke... don't take it seriously)

The joke or why he needs to get his neck stronger?

The joke was b/c I knew you would reply back saying he only wears it as a show item that it's not to make his neck stronger.

No i think he does do it to strengthen his neck. At least to intimidate. When he takes it off the person grabbing it always almost falls over.

SidRon already told us how gay he (justin) was in his staff infection post.  So why he needed his neck stronger was clear for me.

Hmmm... need your neck stronger and you say thanks for the help dicks.  I'm not sure if you're mad at us or if you found a way to get a stronger neck.

Mat is so proud of himself for coming up with a funny joke. Most of his aren't funny so I am conceding this one.

the only way to settle this is with a cage match, fishhooking is allowed and the loser is declared not funny

when I was in Rugby we use to do neck exercises. We would lay on our back then make a bridge from your feet to your head. You have to be very careful with this, then kind of turn your body from one side to the other .. kind of like a reversed hammock (in the way your back isn't flat to the ground the whole time). My coach also said he use to put a band around his head and had some kind of thing to hold the wights then lay at the end of a bench and just held his neck straight for a certain amount of time (I don't remember exactly) I'd guess no more then 15-20 seconds.

Hahaha or wear a beer/football helmet all around the house

ohhh I just saw a clip on the fight network where this japanese fighter had a rope wrapped through the weight and he held the rope in his mouth. It didn't show if he moved or not it was just a quick clip.

Try this old boxing exercise out. lay your back on a pillow so your neck is elevated without support. Then move your head back and forth in a nodding motion so that your chin is going towards your chest. make sure your head isn't being supported by anything but your neck. Do this 50 times. After you are done this, turn your head from side to side like your saying "No" 50 times as your still laying on your back with your head still elevated.

This should strengthen your neck muscles and make it harder for you to go lights out when you take one to the chin.
