I had the pleasure of speaking with Mikey Gomez earlier this afternoon.  He is currently (and first) Cage Warriors Welterweight Champion.  Mikey has a 8 – 4 MMA record. Mikey holds a black belt in Jiu Jitsu but cross trains extensively in all other aspects of MMA at Gracie Barra in Orlando, FL.  Mikey is on the upcoming Elite XC Heat fight card this Saturday on October 4th against Lorenzo Borgomeo who is 4 – 0.

Mikey was born in Santa Barbara, CA but raised in Paraguay near Brazil.  He moved back to the US in 2001 with the hopes to fight professionally and felt the opportunity was better here in the US.  His first Elite XC fight was lost via decision but feels confident that this fight will turn out differently.  He went on to say that his gameplan will remain the same for this fight:

He’s 4 – 0 now in MMA so obviously he’s learning all aspects of the game as he finished 2 of his fights by submission. Training out of a great camp in America Top Team I know he’s going to be ready as well. The gameplan is the same, to see how the fight develops itself and try to finish.

Mikey isn’t to be taken lightly and poses a tough threat against Lorenzo Borgomeo.  Mikey will fight any style with anyone, ground or standing up.

I have no preference honestly.  Most of my wins are by submission on the ground but that’s because people usually try to take me down or we end up on the ground.  It doesn’t matter, I can stand up with anyone or go to the ground with anyone.  That’s why I cross train, I’m an MMA fighter, I don’t look to do just one aspect of the fight game.

Mikey isn’t under contract with Elite XC but hopes his fight on Saturday can change that.  He is looking to make his name widely known on Saturday and hopes to be fighting with a big organization in the future but will continue to take any fights as he stated he will fight anyone.  He will continue to fight with Cage Warriors USA and defend his title. Mikey Gomez was voted Florida’s #1 unsigned 170lb mixed martial artist

Mikey wanted to thank his friends and family, Elite XC and sponsors (KimuraWear.tv and Throwdown Beverages).  You can catch Mikey this Saturday on Elite XC Heat’s undercard which will be streamed live on www.proelite.com.

Special thanks to Samantha at Cage Warriors USA for setting us up with this interview.  And now for a highlight video of Mikey Gomez:
