Since college football has begun and the pro’s are only a week away, I asked myself, if I have to choose to watch one on a certain night, which would it be? This may seem silly with TIVO and DVR but seeing something on a delay takes something away from the event. That’s the beauty of sports; no one knows the outcome before the viewer (except maybe Vegas).
This scenario shouldn’t happen too much but I can see it being a problem for college football since it is on Saturday nights. This Saturday presents a conflict for me. UFC 88 is on and Florida vs. Miami is on at 8pm. So which is it? Should I watch Florida beat Miami for the first time since 1985 or see a few really intriguing fights? Hopefully both but I’m not sure if where I am will offer both.
So I had to write down on paper which I would rather see. Here are my thoughts:
-My favorite team plays 12 times a year (college) and my favorite fighter will fight 2-3 times a year.
-If a football game is boring, you have to wait another week to watch the next one. If a fight is boring, you have to wait a couple of minutes to see another one.
-Once a fight starts there is way more action than football. In football you have t.v. time outs, injury time outs, replay time outs, regular time outs, half time, quarter changes, and time in between each down.
-MMA has less pads than football. Minus any knee braces there is only 8oz of total pads on a fighter. Football has a lot more.
-MMA has more blood. Maybe it’s a guy thing, but nothing gets my testosterone going more than a bunch of blood splattered or pouring out of someone.
-There is one very important national championship game in college football. That is generally on a Monday so there is no real risk this would conflict with a MMA event. On the flip-side, there are title fights about every 2 or 3 MMA events. So, it is more important to watch a title fight rather than a regular game that is not for a championship.
They are my 2 favorite sports and I would hate to miss either but after weighing the benefits, I would have to choose MMA.

That’s a tough call. Good thing there is TIVO!
