August Chumps and Champs

Even though August had less events than the power month July brought, there was still plenty of exciting news and information that came to surface in August. Like last month we will go over news from the month of August.

August 1st Elite XC Partners with FSN

Not sure how valid this partnership will be if Elite XC continues to have the troubles it’s been having (losing $30 million).  But FSN and Elite XC partnered up to show a “best of” for Elite XC.  It’s interesting to see a “best of” show when the organization is still new.

August 3rd WEC 35

WEC 35 brought us some exciting fights with almost all fights being ended in submission or TKO.  The Jamie Varner and Marcus Hicks fight brought a lot of talk about Jamie Varner vs Urijah Faber in the future.  We would love to see the fight between Varner and Faber.

August 6th Affliction Announces Day of Reckoning Event

Affliction announced it’s 2nd fight card for October 11th called Day of Reckoning.  The fights have changed since the original announcement from Affliction due to injuries from some of the fighters.  You can read the most updated fight card here.

August 7th My First Fight

As ashamed as I am, my first fight was posted on this date.  You can watch it here.

August 9th UFC 87 GSP vs Fitch & UFC/WEC Merger

GSP defended his title successfully for the first time against Fitch in a 5 round unanimous decision.  Brock Lesnar rebounded with a win against Heath Herring in a decision as well bringing on the Brock Bandwagon.  Kenny Florian beat loud mouth Roger Huerta and Roger Huerta was labeled our Chump of the Night.

Also we posted about the eventual UFC WEC merger that will merge just two of the weight classes from the WEC into the UFC.  The details are still muddy but will get clearer in the near future.

August 13th Fedor on Brock Lesnar and Randy on Fedor

Fedor stated a fight with Brock was a fight he would like to have.  Randy also talked about his status with his contract dispute and his goal was to make the Fedor fight happen.

August 17th New & Improved

We did a makeover of the site to enhance information displayed on the front page and to make the site more aesthetically pleasing to you readers.

August 18th Matt Hughes Sets Record Straight on GSP

Matt Hughes wrote a blog “clarifying” his statements on GSP.  His blog posts were rather contradictary and most fans didn’t really care anyways.

August 21st Elite XC Denies Troubles

Despite their filing with the SEC, Elite XC denies the troubles that were spewing around the MMA Blogosphere.

August 22nd Elite XC Responds to Antonio Silva Situation

Elite XC released a statement that they stand behind their fighter and will wait to take action on  his alleged steroid use.

August 24th Fedor on Kimbo Slice

Fedor shared his thoughts on Kimbo Slice.  He stated he has a long way to go as a fighter.  There seemed to be more said than this but this was all the interpreter said in his translation.

August 26th WAMMA Answers MMA Chump’s User Questions

In an email interview with WAMMA COO Michael Lynch, Mike answered questions submitted by MMA Chump users on the who, what, why, where and when about WAMMA.

August 27th Bas Rutten Says Kimbo’s Opponents are Handpicked

What we all already knew, was confirmed by Bas Rutten in a Sherdog interview.  Bas talked about how they pick fights that will keep Kimbo winning in his career.

August 29th Tito Ortiz Announcement on Inside MMA

Tito confirmed negotiations with UFC on Inside MMA.

August 30th Couture to Return to UFC

Rather than fight the legal battles against UFC and ZUFFA, it appears Randy Couture has chosen to negotiate with UFC on a 3 fight deal with the UFC putting him up against Brock Lesnar, Nogueira and possibly Fedor.  The details are still unclear at this time.
