Anderson Silva to Fight at 205 July 19

I can’t believe what I just learned.

Dave Meltzer, from Yahoo Sports confirmed today that Anderson Silva will be moving up to fight James Irvin at the Light Heavyweight Division. You may remember James Irvin for his superman punch 8 second win over Houston Alexander, which some argue was a poor call by The Mazz.

Its been rumored now for a little over a week that the UFC would do something to counter Affliction Banned. We speculated that they would actually move the Brock Lesnar Heath Herring fight, but instead we get to see one of baddest dudes prove he can fight at any weight.

James “The Sandman” Irvin brings a 14-4 record to the Octagon. Besides Alexander, he has also had impressive wins over Terry Martin and Scott Smith. Irvin is well versed fighter who brings agility and excitement to every fight. However, Anderson Silva should make short work of him even at 205.

Anderson “The Spider” Silva has the most impressive record of any active fighter. Well considered the top Pound for Pound fighter, he has beaten the who’s-who of middleweight champions. He has beaten Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt, Jorge Rivera, Lee Murray, Jeremy Horn, and Carlos Newton just to name a few. At 21-4 he has fought at much lower weights, but moving to 205 will be different.

While I doubt he couldn’t make it, it would be interesting to see him stay at 185 and just pound Irvin while he was at 205. Silva is the most dangerous fighter in the world, and moving him to July 19th should produce quite high enough ratings to dent Affliction’s expected views.

The event should also see Brandon Vera dropping about 20 pounds and making his debut at the Light Heavyweight and Cain Velasquez versus Jake O’Brien at Heavyweight
