Should Matt Hughes Retire?

Matt Hughes has lost the last 2 fights against one of the best fighters ever in GSP and who is now the number 2 contender, Thiago Alves (behind Jon Fitch who is fighting GSP in August).

If you haven’t seen the Hughes – Alves Fight, you can watch it by clicking that link.

I think Alves would have beat Hughes anyway but I believe Hughes didn’t have his heart in the fight and post fight interviews showed this when he was calling out Serra immediately. I also think the fact Alves didn’t make weight was an unfair advantage even if he had a sprained ankle.

Hughes is getting up there in age at 34 but plenty of +30 fighters have been in this position and overcome it; Rich Franklin, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture to name a few. They came back from losses and so can Hughes if he still has a passion to do it. With out the fire, he’s dead in the water but he has admitted that.

The fact is he is still a fan favorite and the UFC will continue to match fights for him if he chooses to fight. He most likely will not be the title holder again but there is plenty of room for him in the upper echelon of the 170lb weight class.

Matt Hughes should not retire. I think Serra is the chump and look for Hughes to win if and when they finally face each other.

Just finished reading Hughes book Made In America. I think there is still interest in seeing him fight. Hell, people still watch Shamrock and he’s lost 8 of this last 10. If anyone’s going to retire it should be The Iceman read his book too), although I wouldn’t mind watching Griffin kick his ass.
