Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra

Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra looks like it is finally going to happen after a year and a half of injuries and hype.

Hughes reported on his webiste:

This week, I talked to Joe Silva at the UFC and a possible date for Serra and I is in April. I don’t know the exact date right now or venue. So, that is something that I can look forward to and I can set my training up for that schedule.

The two fighters were originally scheduled to meet in November 2007 to compete for the Welterweight title.  The fight was then changed to December 2007 until Serra had to pull out due a herniated disk in his back.

That forced the UFC to set up a match between Hughes and Georges St. Pierre.  St. Pierre easily won that fight, submitting him at the end of the second round via kimura.

Hughes fought Thiago Alves at UFC 85 on June 7th in which he was easily defeated in the second round due to a TKO.  During the fight Hughes injured his knee.

Hughes posted on his blog June 22nd:

I found out my results, I’ve got a totally torn MCL that is still attached to my femur. I’ve got a partially torn PCL. They really think that the PCL will repair itself and that MCL has a chance of repairing itself. So we’re going to hold off on surgery right now. I am going to get a second opinion this week, so that might change; but for now we’re going to hold off on surgery.

He did hold off on surgery and saw progress from his injury.  Hughes posted on August 26th:

Last Wednesday, I went in for my second MRI and also a stress x-ray. It all came back very positive and looks as though I will not need surgery. I still have to go back for my three month check-up to find out more; but as of right now I can do more and start exercising a little bit.

So here we are, at the end of October and finally looking at a long awaited match-up of Hughes and Serra in 6 months.  The two questions I have are; can they both stay healthy for long enough and does anyone still care?  Hughes is still a draw but not nearly what he was.  I think this is a co-main event at best.
