Patrick CoteUFC 90 took place tonight with what was sure to not disappoint fans.  The event was headlined by current champion Anderson Silva vs Patrick Cote.  On time with the 12 AM start of the main event for UFC 90, the main event was underway.  Cote was going into the fight as a drastic underdog to the top pound for pound fighter in MMA Anderson Silva.

While many of us, including myself, found Anderson Silva to have the edge over Cote and capable of an easy victory, Cote was out to prove us wrong.  Cote pushed Silva longer than he had been in a long time.  The first round, both fighter being very timid and it looked as if Silva wanted Cote to engage to take advantage of his incredible counter punching ability.  Cote did not fall for this plan though and made it through round 1 arguably winning round 1 as he controlled the center of the octagon and was the aggressor.

Anderson Silva seemed a little frustrated after Cote didn’t come in on him during round 1 and showed a completely different game plan in round 2 pushing the fight.  Cote proved he has a brick for a chin after taking a kick, knee and punch directly to the chin and not stumbling at all.  This seemed to have Silva rather frustrated but Round 2 was his.

The fight entered round 3, which is the longest Silva has seen his fights go since December 31st 2004.  Cote entered round 3 feeling accomplished as he gave off a grin while holding 3 fingers up to acknowledge this achievement.  But could he keep the pace going?

A bizarre and unfortunate event ocurred very quickly into round 3.  Cote was jumping or bouncing around and seemed to have injured his knee by landing on it weird.  After the fight during the interview in the octagon, Cote had said it was a pre existing injury and apologized to fans.

It was a disappointment to see the fight end in this manner.  You could see Silva was upset that the fight ended this way and while he took the win he wasn’t happy about it.  The official ruling was a TKO.  I have an issue with this ruling.  It should be ruled a NC (no contest).  It should not be taken into the record books as a TKO.  That’s a bad ruling in my opinion.

Nonetheless, Cote should be very pleased with his performance and showed the most poise against Silva than any of his recent opponents.  I think a rematch is likely early next year for the two fighters.  It would be just awesome if Joe Silva of the UFC put this fight on the fight card with GSP vs Penn 2.  That would land for a HUGE fight card and make fans incredibly happy.

A NC….you must be joking!!!! A NC is the result of a fighter not being able to continue due to the actions of another……COTE quit, he bailed because he is a puss…..Silva did what he was told and COTE bailed…END OF STORY !!!!!!
