UFC 100: Blockbuster or Lackluster?

Yahoo reported that the venue for UFC 100 has been set at the Mandalay Bay Center for July 11th.  Although the date has not been confirmed by Nevada State Atheltic Commissioner, it doesn’t appear out of the question.  The real question remains still… will this event put all the belts on the line or not?

For those of you that don’t know, rumors about UFC 100 started circulating a while back that all the belts of the UFC would be on the line at this event.  Dana White didn’t confirm nor deny this rumor when speaking with Yahoo which brings up Dana White’s past of promising big announcements and etc.  I doubt that UFC 100 would feature all 5 belts being on the line as that would mean there would be nothing for UFC 99 and UFC 101 so I wouldn’t count on that.

However, Dana White did seem to offer some sort of guarantee that the event would have some extra razzle dazzle.  At first, I thought, why not do it on July 4th but then rethought that idea… who wants to watch UFC on July 4th, people will be shooting fireworks and celebrating the 4th of July or be on vacation, etc.

MMA Junkie did point out that when you include the various other events (Ultimate Fighters and Fight Nights) this will actually be the 132nd event.  Also from MMA Junkie:

UFC 100 also marks the UFC’s return to the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The UFC has recently opted for the venue’s sister property, the 14,700-capacity MGM Grand Garden Arena, for major Las Vegas events.

Mandalay Bay, which accommodates approximately 11,000 spectators, last hosted an event in July 2008 when then-UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson and Forrest Griffin headlined UFC 86.  Since then, the MGM Grand Garden Arena has hosted UFC 91 and UFC 92 in late 2008, and the venue whosts Saturday’s UFC 94 event and UFC 98 on May 23.

Many are rumoring what the fight card will look like and here’s my idea:

Evans vs Rampage
GSP vs Alves
Silva vs Hendo/Bisping
Liddell vs Couture

I’m just not getting my hopes up.  Dana has promised “big announcement” or “big news” in the past and it has been a recurrence of over promising and under delivering in my opinion when he tries to make a big deal out of something.

I really hope all the belts are online. If you look at the time line leading up to this event all belts could very well be on the line (depends if BJ wins of course). The only belt that is iffy about being on the card is the heavyweight since it will be 2 months away. But of course if there is all belts on the line this is how I see the card.

Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida – LHW Belt
Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin – HW Belt
Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson 2 – MW Belt
Georges St Pierre vs Thiago Alves – WW Belt
BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian – LW Belt
