UFC 94 GSP Vaseline Controversy

Greasing down fighters is illegal and this is what is being accused of GSP’s corner after Saturday night’s fights with GSP vs BJ Penn 2.
The camp of BJ Penn has filed a formal complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over his loss to George St. Pierre.
The incident arose when GSP’s corner rubbed vaseline on GSP’s back in between rounds 1 and 2. Not round 3 and 4 as other sites are reporting. The rubbing was definitely stopped before then. Rear Naked News is up in the air about this… relax dude.
Yes rubbing vaseline on fighters backs is illegal. Was this intentional, it clearly doesn’t look intentional. The fact that it was left over vaseline after rubbing the fighters face would have barely put enough vaseline on GSP’s back to make any kind of hinderance to BJ Penn.
The fact of the matter is GSP was the more dominant fighter. BJ Penn looked out of gas at the end of the second round. If we are to blame the loss on anything, let’s blame it on BJ Penn’s inability to train properly and get gased too early in fights. Any fighter that can push BJ the distance will likely win. BJ Penn is going to have a tough fight against Kenny Florian in the future as Kenny will be able to push BJ the distance.
BJ should stick to lightweight as that is his weight class. Hopefully being embarassed in Welterweight will keep him from jumping up again any time soon.

As a fan who has watched countless MMA matches, I have seen a great deal of situations where the ring officials would not let a round start until they clear both fighters. eg. Too much water on the fighter or on the mat, mouthgaurd missing, loose tape, to name a few.
The ring official was right there to obseve and wipe down GSP’s back. If he felt that the fighter should not be allowed to continue then the round would not have taken place until the infractions were cleared up.
For this discussion to go further would require the ring official to provide feedback on his actions and reasons for letting the round start.
Until then, its just sour grapes

Bj is great on the ground with the use of his legs, they seem to slide off everytime he went for a hold, using his legs for the triangle choke. P.S. I’m not a real big fan of both these fighters. G.S.P with his nut hugger tights. Come on dude wear the shorts.

gsp could drink 6 beer before that fight and stil win .round 1 was close but it defenitely not going for bj .gsp was the one working on bj,defending take down did nothing els than tirede him up!!

Offer to fight him again. If there is any doubt then rematch on spike TV like they did for Tito and Shamrock. The blogs seem to indicate that Chuck thought there was an issue and that there had been past issues. So if there is any doubt let them fight again. GSP dominated, so he shouldn’t be worried if he didn’t cheat. Throw up another match in a couple of months time and let it decide. Personally I think this controversy tarnishes both fighters reputation. It doesn’t matter if its not true about GSP, people will always wonder. And BJ will always look like a fighter making excuses for why he lost.

Greedy Drunk nailed it. It looks horrible for GSP and it looks like Penn is making excuses when it wasn’t even brought up by him. I’m sure his camp saw the video and decided to pursue it.

I personally have never been a GSP fan, now I know why. I hope the look at all the tapes from all of his UFC fights. I think the UFC should have the person outside the ring that puts on the vasoline prior to the fight, do it inbetween rounds that would stop it on all levels.
