WEC 36 aired live earlier tonight with what was supposed to be two title fights turned one title fight. The night was full of underdogs becoming top dogs. It started with Leonard Garcia knocking out Jens Pulver and Chael Sonnen winning a decision against Paulo Filho. It ended with Urijah getting his second loss.
Fan and odds favorite Urijah Faber entered the octagon tonight to defend his title against heavy hitter Mike Brown. Urijah Faber is known for his unorthodox style of fighting and it has done him well thus far. Mike Brown arguably one of the hardest hitters in the featherweight division entered the octagon with something to prove.
The fight started a little slow but the fighters put the pedal to the medal shortly after. Mike Brown landed a left that knocked Faber a little off balance. As Brown moved in, Urijah tried to come in with a backwards elbow. Brown moved just enough out of the way and returned with a hook right around the elbow landing it cleanly on the jaw of Faber. Faber’s feet kept moving forward but the blow was enough to send Faber right to his back.
Mike Brown wasted no time and went right in to continue his barrage of punches. Faber turned over and Brown continued his punches landing several clean to the jaw of Faber from the underside. The ref saw enough and ended the fight when Faber made no attempt to better his situation.
So what’s next for Urijah Faber… who does he fight next? The quick and obvious answer for me is a fighter on tonights fight card. I said it several times during the broadcast and play by play coverage. The fight for Faber is clear in my eyes… Leonard Garcia. I think this would be a great fight for both fighters and if Garcia wins that fight, he is clearly the #1 contender for the featherweight title.
Urijah isn’t done, he shouldn’t retire, he won’t go missing. He will return and this loss may teach him to fight with a little more technique rather than the unorthodox manner he does fight in.

Paulo Filho looked like a fat slob for a so-called Champ. I saw the previous fight with Chael Sonnen and on little touch is not a tap. I see guys get pounded after they hit the ground and it has to be a clear Tap-Tap-Tap before it is a submission. I am starting to think there is dives or fixes in the Martial Arts ring. That is a shame to ruin such an exciting sport. Paulo should have been stripped of the Title when he could not make weight for a Championship Match. That is less than amatuer to not make weight when you are the Man. Paulo you are not the man anymore. You lost your entire fan base with that boner. It puts you in the lowest class known to fighters and fans. I am not saying Chael should have gotten the belt but maybe that is what should be in the contract. After all it was a controversial very quick decision. I think all the fighters going for the belt should get it in the contract that if you don’t make weight you lose the belt or it is vacated and a tournament is held between the other top 4 fighters. It looks to me like he did it on purpose so he wouldn’t lose the belt. I really call it a Chicken Shit way out of losing the belt. Go UFC
