MMA Junkie is reporting that the 170 lb weight class in WEC is likely to be cut and that Condit vs Larson II is not going to happen.
An announced WEC 39 championship rematch between WEC welterweight title-holder Carlos Condit (22-4) and Brock Larson (24-2) has been scrapped – and the WEC’s entire welterweight division could be eliminated, as well.
This is just months after the light heavyweight and middleweight class was scrapped. With the elimination of the Welterweight class from the WEC, this would make only one weight class in both UFC and WEC: 155lb. Jamie Varner holding the belt for the class in the WEC and BJ Penn holding it for the UFC. I don’t think it’s a mystery on who would win out of the two.
Dana White and Zuffa both said they wanted to commit WEC to the lower weight classes of the sport and to have a distinction between the two. Does this mean 155 is next or will they leave the overlapping class intact in both promotions?
My reaction would be to leave 155 in both as if you take it away from the WEC, they really have nothing left and if you move UFC’s 155 to WEC, you move BJ Penn to a promotion with absouletly no challenges, not to mention you lose PPV fights. Now if BJ somehow beats GSP, he could make a case to stay in welterweight in UFC and it would make Dana’s decision to move 155 from UFC to WEC easier.
It’s still too premature to make any accusations or guesses on what exactly will happen. One thing is for sure though, Dana and Zuffa don’t make crazy decisions. Whatever is decided will be well thought out.
